The Event

The second annual 12 Hours of Stank is a NORBA-certified (permit pending) team endurance mountain bike race on Saturday, November 3, 2001 beginning at 9:00 A.M. and running until 9 P.M.. The race venue is the Stanky Creek bike trail in Bartlett, Tennessee (a suburb of Memphis). This trail was built and is maintained by the members of Memphis Racing Cyclists. It is one of the premier singletrack trails in the Memphis area. Teams will consist of three racers riding alternating laps around the Stanky Creek course. The trail is approximately eight miles of tight, semi-technical singletrack with some small hills. No significant elevation change exists.

Racers will have the opportunity to set-up team "stations" in the pit area. This may include tents and/or canopies. FIRES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED! Space for the pit area is at a premium so no vehicles will be allowed. All supplies must be packed in and packed out (approximately 200 yards). Remember: leave no trace.

Helmets are required!!! All racers must be equipped to ride at night. The minimum requirement is a 10-watt lighting system, either helmet or handlebar mounted (many racers will have both). A back-up light source is also required. This may be another lighting system or a working flashlight approved by a race official. These items must be checked off by a race official before any racer will be allowed to compete. All racers must use lights after 4:30 PM. Battery recharging WILL NOT be available. Your team is responsible for having enough battery power for approximately 5 hours of night riding. A good supply of water and energy food is also recommended for your team’s pit area.

The first racer from each team must check-in at the registration tent at least 10 minutes prior to the start to receive their team’s official race bracelet. This bracelet will be worn at all times by the racer on the course and will be handed off from one team member to the next after each stint is completed. The rider who is next up on the team must check-in at the registration tent prior to the start of their lap. The race will begin at 9:00 A.M. with a LeMans style start. One racer from each team will sprint 75 yards to their bike and then ride the first lap.

All teams must designate a captain and co-captain so someone is available at all times in case of problems. Racers can receive mechanical support in the pit area and or start/finish area but may not receive support on the course except by other registered racers. Teammates may supply mechanical support to a fellow racer on the course (including swapping bikes). Food and water may be supplied to racers by support persons only in the start/finish or pit areas. Registered racers and race officials will be the only people allowed on the racecourse. All bikes must have the team’s official race number displayed on the front of the handlebars. Racers must also display their race number on the back of their jersey.

Racers must log-in at the registration tent before and after each lap is completed. This is a required step along with the exchange of the team race bracelet. Racers who are on-deck should check-in before the exchange; this will save time for your team. Riders may ride consecutive laps but must still log-out after each lap for credit. If this step is not completed, the rider will be credited with having ridden only one lap. If your team looses the race bracelet, a 5-minute penalty will be added. A new bracelet will be issued.

The race finishes at 9 P.M.. All teams will begin logging out after this time. The winning team will be the one with the most laps completed and the sequential order of finish within the team’s last lap. For example, a team that completes 12 laps with a finish time 9:22 PM will beat a team who finishes 12 laps with a time of 9:42 PM. A team who completes 13 laps with a finish time of 10:00 PM beats them both. If a racer logs out just before 9:00 and no other racer logs in before 9:05 PM, then no finish time can be recorded and the team will be disqualified.

Proper racing and mountain biking etiquette is expected from all racers at all times. This includes allowing faster riders to pass unimpeded; not cutting any part of the course; no profanity or foul language; and respecting the race environment at all times. Violating these rules may lead to team disqualification, at the race director’s discretion. Since this race is being held in the middle of an urban area, we ask that racers respect "quiet hours" from 9:00 PM until 8:00 AM the morning after the race. Teams may choose to spend the night in the pit area after the race concludes.

Awards will be presented immediately following the race.
