12 Hours of Stank Flyer

November 3rd, 2001

9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Torrential rains dumped a couple of inches on the Stanky Creek trails hours before the start of the 12 Hours Of Stank race. After careful  consideration the race was postponed until November 3, 2001. The creek crossing had four feet of rapidly flowing water, making it impassable. With ever present threat of more rain, and the potential damage to the trail, we called the race. We hope you can make the Fall version of the 12 Hours Of Stank.

Thanks, MRC

It's all about water under the bridge (and over some).

Last year saw 25 teams show up for the second running of the only mountain bike endurance race in the area. You never know what will happen during a 12 hour race, last year a 100 year old oak tree decided to fall during the third hour of the race. It was a bit of a surprise to the racers as they descended one of the faster portions of the trail only to find a tree completely blocking the way.  The fastest lap (37:59) was turned in by the winning Mid South Velo (Outdoors) team. Most of the top teams were running in the 40 to 44 minute range. Those were some impressive times, especially at night.  This year the trail is in excellent shape, so it should be even better.

It is hard to describe how much fun it is to take off into the night, after already competing in 3 or 4 time trials during the daylight. All you can do is follow your light... until you notice that you are closing on your prey, a fellow cyclist caught in the glow of your helmet mounted light. You're almost there when.... Where did that log come from? You never noticed it during the day. After dusting yourself off, you notice that someone is chasing you. The race is on. Come and try it out, there is a class for everyone. Thanks, MRC
